• Light: Masdevallia hirtzii prefers shady conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the delicate leaves. Bright, indirect light or dappled shade is ideal. Too much light can cause leaf yellowing or scorching, while insufficient light can inhibit flowering.

• Temperature: This species prefers cool to intermediate temperatures. Aim for daytime temperatures between 15-24°C (59-75°F) and nighttime temperatures between 10-18°C (50-64°F). Consistent cool temperatures, especially at night, are crucial for proper growth and flower development. High temperatures can stress the plant and make it susceptible to diseases.  

• Humidity: Masdevallia hirtzii thrives in high humidity, ideally between 60-80%. Providing adequate humidity is essential to prevent dehydration and ensure healthy growth. Consider using humidifiers, humidity trays filled with pebbles and water, or grouping plants together to increase local humidity. Good air circulation is also important to prevent fungal problems in humid conditions.

• Watering: It is essential to keep the potting mix consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use high-quality water, such as rainwater or reverse osmosis water, to avoid mineral buildup. Water thoroughly when the top of the potting mix feels slightly dry to the touch, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water, as this can lead to root rot. The frequency of watering will depend on the potting mix, temperature, humidity, and time of year.  

• Potting Mix: A well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix is essential. Suitable mixes include fine-grade bark, sphagnum moss, perlite. Repotting is usually done every 1-2 years or when the potting mix decomposes.
