Amorphophallus titanum Culture

Successful cultivation of the Amorphophallus titanum requires careful attention to its unique needs. Here are some important cultural tips to ensure its thriving growth:

Light: Amorphophallus titanum prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, prolonged exposure can cause leaf burn.

Temperature: To mimic its tropical rainforest origin, provide warm temperatures throughout the year. Aim for daytime temperatures between 24-32°C (75-90°F) and slightly cooler nights around 20-26°C (68-79°F).

Humidity: High humidity is crucial for the successful cultivation of this species. Maintain humidity levels between 70-80% by using humidifiers, misting regularly, or placing the plant on a humidity tray.

Watering: During the active growing season, Amorphophallus titanum requires consistent moisture. Water thoroughly, allowing the pot to drain completely to prevent root rot. Reduce watering during the dormant period when the plant's leaves die back.

Amorphophallus titanum, also known as corpse flower due to its odor. This species comes from the tropical rainforests of Sumatra. In 2011 a plant of the Royal Botanic Garden of Kew (London) won the prize of the most stinking plant in the world. In the Botanical Garden of Bonn in 2003 a specimen produced an inflorescence of 3.06 m measured from the surface of the tuber. When these plants reach adult size, the plant will create the largest flower in the world.
